ANGEL'S BIO            résumé en français

Angel Ortiz has been dancing the mambo for 9 years. He began his dance training while in High School. At that time, he was "discovered" by the high school jazz instructor. Shortly thereafter, he received a ballet scholarship. In 1978, Angel began intensive courses both in Ballet and Jazz at Morelli Ballet, Inc. There he studied jazz under instructor Lynn Simonson. His ballet studies included instruction from various teachers. During that time, Angel excelled in dancing and performed in various dance workshops.

After a few years away from dance, Angel returned and in 1991, he became a principal dancer with the Eddie Torres Latin Dance Company. It was while he was in the company that he developed his own unique style of dancing the mambo. He was able to incorporate the elements of jazz and the mambo while learning to dance on "2". During his 6 years with the Eddie Torres Latin Dance Company, he performed in venues throughout New York City that included The Apollo Theatre, The Rainbow Room, The Supper Club, Lincoln Center-Alice Tully Hall and multiple appearances at Madison Square Garden’s Bi-annual Salsa Festivals. His nightclub appearances include the Copacabana, Latin Quarters, S.O.B.’s, Broadway II, and other area clubs. His music video credits include appearances with Rey Ruiz, as well as the Tito Nieves music video for the major motion picture "I Like it Like That", and Orquesta de La Luz . In addition, Angel was featured in the instructional video "How to dance Salsa Nightclub Style" by Eddie Torres.

In 1992, Angel Ortiz traveled to Puerto Rico and South America with the Eddie Torres Latin Dance Company and major latin recording artists such as Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Oscar DeLeon, Tito Nieves, Orquesta de La Luz, Ismael Miranda, Jose Alberto, Domingo Quinones, to name a few. This tour was in celebration of Tito Puente’s 100th Album. During this time, Angel performed in places such as San Juan, Puerto Rico, Bogota, Barranquilla, and Cali, in Colombia and in Santiago De Chile. The venues of these performances included audiences of over 60,000. In 1993, Angel participated as a principle dancer in the major motion picture "Carlito’s Way".

In August of 1997, Angel Ortiz participated in the first World Salsa Congress held in San Juan, Puerto Rico August 28-31,1997. He created the dance group "Team N.Y." for this event and served as dance coordinator for the New York City area. He also choreographed and performed in the premiere dance number representing New York City.

In December of 1997, Direct TV, along with Dancing Hips, Inc. brought Angel Ortiz to Japan where he visited the cities of Tokyo, and Osaka. While there, he performed at the "100% Salsa Night" event in Tokyo and at the "1997 Christmas Super Bash" in Osaka. Angel Ortiz conducted mambo dance workshops of various levels in both cities. He also had the opportunity to provide private instruction to several of the Japanese instructors. In May 1998, he traveled to Italy where he served as an assistant and provided dance instruction on several workshops held at the Park Hotel Zadina, located in Rimini.
